In honor of the six-month milestone since Amiosecs Early Careers’ largest Recruitment Cohort so far, we spoke with members of our Early Careers Team to reflect on the journey of the past half-year. In part three of our series, we spoke with Jake, one of our Software Engineering Apprentices.
Could you give us a description of you and your background?
My name is Jake, I’m 19 and I’m originally from South Yorkshire. I recently completed Sixth Form, studying Maths, Computer Science and Economics, giving me the opportunity to work on a degree apprenticeship with Amiosec.
What made you interested in Engineering?
Starting Computer Science in year 9, I really enjoyed the process of creating my own code to solve a variety of different problems. I’ve always been a natural problem solver and creative thinker, so nearing the end of Sixth Form, I knew I wanted to pursue something in Engineering.
How is your experience of the Apprenticeship so far?
The Apprenticeship has been amazing! There has already been so many opportunities to learn and work in fields that I didn’t know existed. It’s been a great chance for us to work on a project we can call our own, without being handheld, but still having people in the company to support and help when needed. Everyone is so friendly, with a great environment, inside and out of work!
What has been your favorite bit so far?
My highlight so far has been learning about Printed Circuit Board (PCB) design, a field I had never even considered before, and just recently having the circuit boards I designed for the past few months physically delivered. It’s an accomplishment I am very proud of!
What is your advice for others seeking an Apprenticeship?
Just keep looking and searching, the right opportunity will present itself to you, even if you don’t know it! Something that may have even seemed possible could be the life you’re living in the near to distant future, just don’t give up.
