Game-changing STEM: Amiosec in the arcade

Set across six STEM-filled days our Amiosec Early Careers Group and volunteers participated in the Cheltenham Science Festival from 4 - 9 June; and what a blast they had!

One of the UKs leading STEM events, Cheltenham Science Festival is an annual event that attracts some of science's greatest minds including space scientist Maggie Aderin-Pocock, award-winning physicist Brian Cox and 'Deadly 60' presenter Steve Backshall .

Inspiring young minds

Tasked with creating an interactive and engaging experience to encourage more young people to pursue a career in STEM, the Amiosec Early Careers Group set their sights on the festival’s arcade space as the perfect location to inspire the next generation of innovators.

The big question is, how did they make that happen?

“We started by getting in a room and throwing ideas around. Eventually this evolved into an Amiosec games console; something fun for children to play with and perfect for an arcade. As part of our apprenticeship at Amiosec we were given the freedom to work with other business areas, manage our own time, and branch out to bring this idea to life.”

– Jake C | Software Engineering Apprentice

So, the idea was born – a handheld gaming console featuring a variety of classic games and quizzes to be developed by our talented apprentices with support from our gaming-expert grads and wider Early Careers Group.

The Challenge Boards

The handheld console was the star of our exhibit, attracting students, teachers and the general public to have a go at getting their name on the leaderboard! This was more than just a fun gadget, but a testament to the hard work of our Early Careers Group.

“We spent about eight months of our life building towards this, so it’s amazing to actually see people playing our games, enjoying it and actually having a physical product that people can interact with. It’s great – really fun stuff!”

– Max P | Software Engineering Apprentice

Level complete!

Cheltenham Science Festival was a fantastic experience allowing the Amiosec team to inspire the next generation of STEM leaders. People across the business have been blown away by the incredible efforts put in by our Early Careers Group and volunteers to make this event a success. Those in particular who supported the apprentices with the production of the Challenge Boards have been impressed by their can-do attitude and teamwork.

“The Apprentices have done a great job. It’s really impressive to see them take complete ownership of the product. They’ve taken it from start to finish. They’ve worked out all the bugs. They’ve been so professional in the way that they’ve handled all of the problems that they faced whilst developing it and it’s really lovely to see them explaining it to younger generations.”

– Caroline S | Production Manager

Cheltenham Science Festival is such an inspiring event for anyone interested in STEM, but what advice would our apprentices today offer to future generations when it comes to stepping into STEM careers?

“I applied to many different apprenticeships and it was important for me to find one that was right for me. My best advice is to stick to what you want to do and keep applying to things that you’re interested in. That’s how I got into my apprenticeship here at Amiosec and I’m really enjoying it. “

– Josh W | Software Engineering Apprentice

Thank you to everyone who visited the Amiosec arcade stand and participated in our games, ciphers and challenges. We would also like to extend our thanks to our Early Careers Group, the wider Amiosec team involved with the support of the festival and Cheltenham Festivals for organising yet another fantastic STEM showcase in our local area.
