As lockdown continues in the UK, the team at Amiosec have been working hard behind the scenes to turn our much loved “Cyber Security Detectives – A Race Against Time!” STEM activity into an online activity that can be accessed from home. We want to ensure that students across the country still have the opportunity to learn about STEM and participate in exciting STEM activities, in order to showcase the interesting world of engineering.
Amiosec are strong supporters of STEM outreach programs, and for the past year we have been working with the Cyber Schools Hub project (now part of the CyberFirst Schools programme) to educate and inspire students across the South West to think about a career in STEM. In a recent blog written by NCSC’s Deputy Director for Cyber Growth, we can see that the Cyber Schools Hub project has had an amazing impact, with participating Hub schools showing a 43% increase in the number of students taking GCSE Computer Science between 2018/19 and 2019/20. The CyberFirst Schools programme now hopes to replicate this success nationally.
Inspired by this success, the STEM outreach team at Amiosec have worked hard over the past week to turn their STEM activity into resources that can be downloaded and followed at home, hoping that we can reach students across the whole of the UK, not just those based near us in the South West. The resource pack includes instruction sheets to follow, worksheets to fill in, videos to watch and some hints & tips if you get stuck! It is aimed at students between ages 8-16, and aims to teach students about encryption, staying safe online and problem solving. So what are you waiting for? Cyber Security Detectives – A Race Against Time!
The CEO of Acme Corporation has been captured and her kidnappers are demanding a ransom of £10 million to be paid within the hour for her safe return, or they are threatening to blow up the warehouse where they are holding her! This is where we need your help as our Cyber Security Detectives to rescue her before the deadline.
Using your investigative and problem solving skills, you will gain access to her email account to track down the kidnapper, crack an encrypted message to find the location of the warehouse, and then defuse the bomb all before the time runs out!
