Description
Do {Cyber} is a project group established to bring together cyber representatives from employers, professional bodies, delivery partners, education providers and academia from Bristol, Bath and the West of England region. The aim is to work collectively to help create, raise awareness and deliver more cyber opportunities to young people in order to help fulfil skills gaps and meet future skills needs.
On Tuesday 4 December 2018, at UWE, Bristol, {Do Cyber} invited year 8 & 9 students (12 – 14 years) from over 30 schools and academies across the West of England region to participate in a cyber taster day. Amiosec attended and hosted 2 sessions of a workshop titled “Crime scene detection and the history of cryptography” with about 30 students in each session. The workshop highlighted the different cryptography techniques that have been used throughout the years, and then challenged the students to use their maths and problem solving skills to break cryptographic codes and solve a murder mystery. The workshop also covered what sort of subjects the students should think about studying, what university degrees were most useful and generally what skills were needed to get into cyber security careers in the future. The students and teachers were extremely enthusiastic and there was plenty of positive feedback!
